How group governance works

An organizer proposes. The recorded governance rule determines what approval is required before anything progresses.

Why it matters

Group money fails socially long before it fails financially. Recorded rules protect the organizers as much as the contributors.

How it works

  1. 1Organizers are named and must join and accept responsibility.
  2. 2A governance rule is recorded: fixed quorum, majority, unanimous or role-required.
  3. 3A proposal is raised and approvals are recorded against it.
  4. 4The engine evaluates whether the rule was met.

A practical example

In the Varsityville CCTV collection, the rule requires two organizer approvals, one of which must be the treasurer. One approval alone does not move anything.

Common misunderstanding

Adding someone's phone number is thought to create authority.

What to check before acting

  • Check whether every named organizer has accepted.
  • Read the governance rule before contributing.
